On Facials

Are you curious about facials?  Are you wondering why you should have one?  Well this post is for you..

So why should you have a facial?

Seasons change and so do your skin’s needs.  It may feel dryer in the winter, more sensitive in the summer and so forth.  Having regular facials will help ease these discomforts and leave you feeling comfortable all year round.

Professional Extractions  Leave this step to the pros!  I know there’s something so excruciatingly satisfying about doing this step yourself but it’s so easy to overdo it and cause irritation to your skin.  You don’t want to do more harm than good by DIY’ing this at home.

Facial Massage. This step is deeply relaxing.  It helps relax and detoxify the body and increase blood circulation.  What does this mean?  It means a radiant complexion!  You know that “glow” everyone is after?  Well this is key to achieving that.  This alone might be all the reason you need to have a facial.  I know it’s mine.

Expert Skincare Advice.  Don’t get lost in the drug store aisles spending money on random products that aren’t right for you or are full of useless fillers and toxins.  It’s so easy to fall prey to this when you’re wandering the aisles looking for that magic fix.  Save your money for the good stuff and you won’t regret it.   Skincare trends come and go and we can help you decipher between the good and the garbage.  We’ll work with you to find products that you’ll actually LOVE to use instead of adding to the pile of unused splurge buys hiding in the deep crevices of your bathroom cupboard.  We all have these items and that’s okay but let’s not add to them!

And one of the most life giving reasons to have a facial..Relaxation.  It’s an hour where you get to lay under warm blankets, rejuvenate, and get taken care of.  This promotes an overall sense of well being which can last for days.  Sounds pretty great right?  It kinda is.  Come try one today!

On Kindness and Compassion

We have collaborated with Energy Rebalancer Amélie St. Pierre of Liberate your True Self in the curation of our Ritual Pedicure foot baths.  Her innate connection to crystals and gift to empower and rebalance our energy fields helped us in creating baths that truly enrich the experience of this soulful treatment.

For the month of December our Ritual Pedicure will focus on Kindness and Compassion.

Pink Peruvian opal is the stone of gentle love and kindness which is the greatest gift that can be offered.  It helps us open our hearts so that we may give and receive love without expecting anything in return.

Essential oil of Ylang ylang is a loving, sensual oil which boosts the heart chakra by balancing love of self and others.  It can ease heartache and release negative emotions such as anger, possessiveness and low self esteem.  It nourishes confidence, self love and spiritual awareness while minimizing tension and stress.

Pink Himalayan bath salts encourage profound relaxation, help reduce tension and stress and recharge our bodies with its mineral rich content.

On Jade rolling

What is jade rolling?

Jade rolling is a centuries old beauty ritual that is evidenced to being used as far back as 7th century china as well as by the Mayans and Egyptians as a massage and meditation tool over 5000 years ago. Jade rollers are made of an oblong piece of jade attached to a handle which allows you to roll the stone across your face in order to help depuff (via manual lymph drainage), allow for increased product penetration, sooth and smooth the skin. As with most beauty routines it’s the simplicity and efficacy of jade rolling that has allowed it to stand the test of time.

Why to do it..

– Increases circulation: The action of jade rolling increases blood flow in the skin. This increase in flow results in the detoxifying of the skin, and can lead to increased vibrancy, clarity, and a radiant complexion. The saying “no flow, no glow” has been used to describe this attribute of jade rolling.

– Increased blood flow helps tone facial muscles to contour the face and smooth wrinkles.

– In the same way your body feels refreshed after cardio, Jade rolling will have the same effect on the facial muscles.

– The lymph draining action and inherent coolness of jade rolling helps to defpuff and detoxify the skin as well as reduce the appearance of darkness under the eyes: Proper Jade rolling technique is a form of manual lymph drainage massage and helps to rid the body of waste, toxins and other unwanted materials via the lymphatic system.

– Calm and soothe. Jade is a naturally cooling stone and will help calm and soothe the skin. Place rollers in the fridge for a few minutes before rolling for added cooling/depuffing benefits. Kind of like putting cucumbers over your eyes but soooooooo much better!

– Help serums penetrate more effectively into the skin: Warm the rollers in warm water then roll over any serum to help the product penetrate more deeply into the skin.

Attributes of jade:

Jade is believed to relax the nervous system, help discharge toxins in the body and is said to increase chi, a revitalizing energy in the body.

On Ritual Pedicures

We so often hear “treat yourself” or “indulge” and while there are an infinite number of ways to do this there are fewer ways to make that treat or indulgence an ongoing gift to yourself. We created the Ritual pedicure in collaboration with Spiritual Healer Amélie St. Pierre, of Liberate Your True Self, to inspire self care habits that inspirit, rejuvenate and help relieve daily stresses. Our Ritual Pedicures feature flower filled, crystal charged foot soaks you can recreate at home as your own foot soak or as a bath. In spa the treatment will include extended soak time and extended neck and shoulder massage time using featured essential oils.

1.25hrs, $85

Every other month we will share a new Ritual Pedicure treatment, each with its own unique theme and purpose.

October’s Ritual Pedicure ingredients:

On why to choose non toxic nail polish

Why should you choose non toxic nail polish? Why not is really the question.  Traditional nail polish is filled with chemicals that have been shown to be hazardous to your health because of  links to things from skin irritation to cancers.  At minimum these harmful chemicals can cause dryness and weakening of the nails.  These aren’t compromises you should have to make when healthy, beautiful nails are what you’re after.

The top three offenders, known as the “toxic trio” are Formaldehyde, Toluene and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP).  Formaldehyde, traditionally used to embalm dead bodies is a known carcinogen.  Toluene, a petroleum/coal tar derived chemical is known to be harmful to the nervous system, has been linked to impaired human reproduction, impaired breathing and nausea.  DBP has been shown to affect the reproductive system and has been linked to cancer and birth defects. And though a layer or two of polish may not necessarily cause these reactions it is the constant exposure and absorption over years of use that is the concern.  The good news is that the “toxic trio” are being removed from many polish brands..so hoorah! But buyer beware: they still exist in a lot of nail polishes so read the ingredient list.

To go a step further some nail polish brands have removed formaldehyde resin- a less toxic derivative of formaldehyde, Camphor – a known neurotoxin,  Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP) – which research suggests can affect hormones, reproduction, metabolism and development, Ethyl Tosylamid – which has raised concern over antibiotic resistance, and Xylene – a known allergen and possible carcinogen.

So progress is being made!  Let’s support the thoughtful and innovative brands who make amazing products which allow us to experience beauty and healthy choices simultaneoulsy.  Beauty without compromise.

Our favourite polishes come from tenoverten (8 free) and Deborah Lippmann (7 free).  These vegan and cruelty free polishes paint like a dream, are as durable as any other polish we’ve tried and come in so many beautiful colours you won’t even know what you’re missing.

On Opening Wildflower Beauty Bar

I created Wildflower Beauty Bar because I wanted to create a different kind of spa experience. I wanted an inviting space that reminded my guests about the importance of self care and the positive effects of rejuvenation and relaxation.  I wanted it to be a place not only for special occasions but for everyday or any day – an everyday luxury.  That was the drive but the reality of bringing it to life was the difficult part.  I wanted to create this space and I wanted it to be mine so I could make it everything I envisioned it to be.  But with 2 young children and a reliable job I was hesitant to make the leap.  It was something I wanted to do but was it something I should do? The answer came via phone call from the owner of the space who I had met a few weeks earlier at a viewing.  He had called to ask if I was interested in renting it and if so, I could have it.  Wait. What? Really? I could make Wildflower a thing? I wasn’t quite ready at this point but his phone call got the ball rolling and from then on I couldn’t stop myself from going for it – even if I wanted to. Was it a wise decision? WelI, when I asked a good friend and fellow entrepreneur this question she responded with a chuckle “well, it’s never a ‘wise’ decision to work for yourself but you do it because you can’t stop yourself”. That rang so true with me.  She understood! It was wonderful to hear someone say it out loud! Thanks Nicola 🙂

So, wise decision? Debatable.  AMAZING and fulfilling decision? A resounding YES! Has it all been akin to running through a fragrant rose filled garden? Not quite.  But on the whole it’s been an amazing period of growth.  It’s still to be told how I will fare in this new venture but it’s a guaranteed adventure and life giver for me. It’s rekindled my creativity and my love for all things beauty.  Beauty in all forms – in the difficult, in the challenge, in the joy, in the material, in the complex human form.  I hope I can inspire in my guests some of the beauty that creating this little shop has brought forth for me. And I thank you in advance if you are inclined to be part of my adventure.

Sincerely,

Gretchen
