Why should you choose non toxic nail polish? Why not is really the question.  Traditional nail polish is filled with chemicals that have been shown to be hazardous to your health because of  links to things from skin irritation to cancers.  At minimum these harmful chemicals can cause dryness and weakening of the nails.  These aren’t compromises you should have to make when healthy, beautiful nails are what you’re after.

The top three offenders, known as the “toxic trio” are Formaldehyde, Toluene and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP).  Formaldehyde, traditionally used to embalm dead bodies is a known carcinogen.  Toluene, a petroleum/coal tar derived chemical is known to be harmful to the nervous system, has been linked to impaired human reproduction, impaired breathing and nausea.  DBP has been shown to affect the reproductive system and has been linked to cancer and birth defects. And though a layer or two of polish may not necessarily cause these reactions it is the constant exposure and absorption over years of use that is the concern.  The good news is that the “toxic trio” are being removed from many polish brands..so hoorah! But buyer beware: they still exist in a lot of nail polishes so read the ingredient list.

To go a step further some nail polish brands have removed formaldehyde resin- a less toxic derivative of formaldehyde, Camphor – a known neurotoxin,  Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP) – which research suggests can affect hormones, reproduction, metabolism and development, Ethyl Tosylamid – which has raised concern over antibiotic resistance, and Xylene – a known allergen and possible carcinogen.
